Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Care
How should I choose a dentist?
When you’re searching for a dentist, you want to be able to count on that person as an advisor you can trust for the long run so you can find your dental home. You can start by using the ADA’s Find-A-Dentist tool to search for a dentist that’s conveniently located near your preferred location and is in your insurance network.
It’s also good to ask around — maybe your parents or friends have someone they highly recommend. Make sure the office hours are convenient for your needs. Next, you’ll schedule a consultation with your dentist prior to making an appointment to ask such questions as:
- Will you provide instructions on dental health?
- Do you provide emergency dental care?
- Is your staff familiar with my dental plan? Do you provide additional financial options for treatment costs?
- If you have dental anxiety you’ll want to see how they can help
What can I expect at my first appointment?
At your first appointment, you’ll meet Dr. Hatch and get to know our office. First, you’ll have to fill out some paperwork so we can learn about your health history. You can print and fill them out prior to your appointment to save time, or arrive 15 minutes early to fill them out.
Then, we’ll perform a full examination to assess the current state of your oral health. We’ll take X-rays, as well as visually and physically check your mouth. You may not receive a cleaning at your first appointment because we want to create a hygiene plan for you first.
How often should I go to the dentist?
We recommend that you come to our office every six months for a regular appointment. At this visit, we’ll perform an examination of your oral health and clean your teeth to make sure they’re completely clear of plaque and bacteria.
Even if you take care of your teeth by brushing and flossing daily, it’s easy to miss areas of your mouth. The plaque on these areas can harden into a material called tartar or calculus, which is more difficult to clean off.
